The primary responsibility of the CDO is to implement a clear and passionate vision for sustainable fund development. The CDO will design and execute a comprehensive and diversified fundraising strategic plan, which includes special events, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, direct response campaigns, government and foundation grants, third-party events, endowments, and planned giving. This position is a key leadership team member, reports to the CEO, and leads a team. Offices in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Major Responsibilities: The CDO is responsible for leading and managing all Center development efforts effectively and efficiently. Working with the CEO, the Board, and key stakeholders, this leader will:

  • Enhance and lead a sophisticated development practice to build upon current success and evaluate opportunities to introduce additional best practices. Strategize, design, organize, implement, and execute all fundraising activities while aligning with organizational metrics and objectives.
  • Strategically increase the overall capacity of the development team and fundraising budget while diversifying funding and creating new sustainable revenue generation.
  • Lead with positive influence, strategy, mentoring of best practices, accountability, and clear direction to ensure organizational alignment, engagement, and growth of current/future team members.
  • Determine goals, cash flow projections, and an annual work plan to reach overall development goals. Work with the CEO and CFO to develop all fundraising-related budgets.
  • Responsible for managing a portfolio of high-value donors and prospects and maintaining frequent solicitations throughout the month. Provide strategic oversight for major gifts and planned giving programs, ensuring the effective execution of fundraising initiatives.
  • In collaboration with the CEO, directly manage fundraising with the Board of Directors to ensure they meet the annual Board goal through their personal contributions, company contributions, and introductions/referrals to new donors.
  • Oversee the grant writer for writing and developing all grant proposals, solicitation letters, requests for support, and foundation relationships.
  • Partner with the Database Administrator for all fundraising reports and donor data management to achieve informed, fact-based decisions. These will include reports to the Board of Directors and fundraising committees.
  • Oversee internal and external event teams to plan, organize, and implement social events, emphasizing high-profile annual events.
  • Oversee communications and marketing to plan and deliver development and donor-related publications, messaging, strategy, and events.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws; maintain accountability standards to donors and ensure compliance with the code of ethical principles of professional conduct for fundraising executives; demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude; and convey sensitivity to needs of the donor.
  • Attend Board meetings and other meetings as an ambassador of the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Experience soliciting six and seven figure gifts from a wide array of donors.
  • Experience managing capital campaigns.
  • Track record of personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing asks from a diversified book of business.
  • A thoughtful and influential leader with proven experience building and growing high-achieving teams.
  • Demonstrates and communicates a passion for the organization’s core purpose.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of and appreciation for the philanthropic process and individual giving behaviors combined with direct solicitation experience.
  • A high-energy, results-oriented leader with entrepreneurial spirit and innovative drive; creative and willing to try new ideas.
  • Has a flexible and adaptable style. Able to lead transformation and manage a team through process changes.
  • Possesses business savviness with the ability to engage, influence, and assess risk, issues, and priorities.
  • Has excellent strategic planning, communications, team building, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Operates with the utmost integrity and values consistent with organizational DNA and the highest ethical standards of the fundraising profession.
  • Strong dedication to delivering with excellence.

Critical Competencies for Success:

  • A proven track record of experience developing and implementing successful, multi-million dollar fundraising strategies and supporting donor objectives across all fundraising operations, including building the case, cultivating donors, managing an effective fundraising team, and soliciting and securing major and leadership-level gifts.
  • Strategic Leadership: In an environment where the Center’s strategic plan guides key decisions, the new CDO will join forces with the rest of the senior team to lead the execution of strategies that will assist the accomplishment of organizational goals. The ideal candidate must:
    • Be an effective consensus builder, skilled at keeping internal and external constituents engaged.
    • Continue to build synergistic relationships with other businesses and organizations in North Texas.
    • Develop a broad, coordinated, and inclusive approach to understand the viewpoints of others and bring people together while diversifying revenue streams.
  • Strong Communicator: In a situation that requires a strong, externally facing leader to promote the Center’s work to the LGBTQIA community, the North Texas business community, and the general public, the Chief Development Officer will:

    • Be a good listener and strong communicator, with strong interpersonal skills and a desire to be both internally and externally facing to ensure visibility in the community and effective management of a high-achieving team.
